Review Chemical communication via high molecular weight pheromones in mammals
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction Pheromonal signals provide specific information concerning the identity, gender, endocrine, and social status of different members of the population in a variety of mammals [1;2]. Pheromones have been found in saliva, skin gland secretions, and urine. For example, pheromones in urine excreted from male and female rats induce various changes in gonadal functions such as reflex ovulation in the absence of coitus and mounting, a reduction in the oestrous cycle of female rats from 5 to 4 days, and oestrous synchrony among female rats living together. The vomeronasal system is a chemosensory system for receiving pheromones organized in parallel with the main olfactory system in most terrestrial

Facts, fallacies, fears, and frustrations with human pheromones.
Among primates in general, pheromones are of variable importance to social communication. Data on humans have generated the greatest controversy regarding the existence of pheromonal communication. In this review, the likelihood of pheromonal communication in humans is assessed with a discussion of chemical compounds produced by the axilla that may function as pheromones; the likelihood that th...
متن کاملChemical Signals and Vomeronasal System Function in Axolotls (ambystoma Mexicanum)
Most tetrapods, the group of vertebrates that includes amphibians, reptiles, and mammals, possess separate olfactory and vomeronasal systems. Why? What are the functions of these two anatomically distinct chemosensory systems? Although the vomeronasal system is often presumed to be specialized for mediating responses to pheromones and the olfactory system assumed to respond to “general odorants...
متن کاملThe joy of sex pheromones.
Sex pheromones provide an important means of communication to unite individuals for successful reproduction. Although sex pheromones are highly diverse across animals, these signals fulfil common fundamental roles in enabling identification of a mating partner of the opposite sex, the appropriate species and of optimal fecundity. In this review, we synthesize both classic and recent investigati...
متن کاملPheromones: Convergence and Contrasts in Insects and Vertebrates^
Chemical signals or pheromones are the most important signals for most of the animal kingdom. The organization of the olfactory system and brain, independently evolved across many taxa, makes it almost inevitable that chemical communication will evolve as animals are selected to respond to their chemical enviroimient (Wyatt, 2003). As might be expected, pheromones play key roles in the lives of...
متن کاملMammalian pheromones.
Mammalian pheromones control a myriad of innate social behaviors and acutely regulate hormone levels. Responses to pheromones are highly robust, reproducible, and stereotyped and likely involve developmentally predetermined neural circuits. Here, I review several facets of pheromone transduction in mammals, including (a) chemosensory receptors and signaling components of the main olfactory epit...
